    DEAF REFUGEES:

UNDERSTANDING THEIR EXPERIENCE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY WHILE EXPLORING RESOURCES AND ACTIONS FOR INTERPRETERS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE ON LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND GLOBAL LEVELS.

This workshop is presented from a first-hand refugee and immigrant perspective, blended with academic research that focuses on exploring the status of Deaf refugees, Internally Displaced Deaf People,  and Deaf immigrants on local, national and global levels. By the end of the workshop, participants will know how to better serve members of those groups as interpreters and allies. Participants will learn about how the system works, what humanitarian services are available, national statistics on refugees, local services, cultural diversity and the challenges that come with community integration. This workshop will give you the tools you need as interpreters and community members to positivley contribute to the quality of life for Deaf and hard of hearing refugees.

Participants will have opportunity for group activities and roundtable discussions with topics like, “how can we, as interpreters, contribute to the increased quality of like for Deaf refugees while abiding by the CPC.” Participants will learn about various terminologies used to identify Refugees, Immigrants, Internally Displaced persons, Asylees, the process through which one goes through in the local, national and international system (mainly UNHCR, IRC, etc...). Additionally,  topics related to cultural diversity among Deaf refugees, struggles with community integration, and obstacles in accessing available resources are some of the topics that will be will be discussed. Group activities will be facilitated for participants to share perspectives and discuss individual and collective action plans.
